"MOLDOVA IN EASTERN EUROPE: FROM CRISIS TO BREAKTHROUGH"

Vladimir Putin’s projection into Ukraine focuses our attention on all of the states of Russia’s “near abroad”; and to the still unfinished adjustments in Eastern Europe following the collapse of the Soviet Union two decades ago. Surely, all of Eastern Europe is nervous. Moldova, part of the ex-Soviet space and including self-governing, pro-Russian Transnistria, has been advancing towards an Association Agreement with the European Union. Now, as it observes Russian actions in its neighbor Ukraine, it seeks European and American support.

At this historic moment of the collision between Russian imperial purpose and the efforts of the nations of the ex-Soviet space to define themselves, we will be addressed by the Ambassador of a state which is a part of that collision.

Ambassador Munteanu holds a B.A. degree in Communications and Journalism from Moldova State University, a M.A. degree in political analysis from the National School of Political and Administrative Studies in Romania, and a Ph.D. in Public Law from the Free International University of Moldova. In his career as a journalist and commentator, he was a contributor on Radio Free Europe for almost a decade; a founder and executive director of a nationwide, independent center for political research, chief editor of the Political Science Journal “Arena Politicii,” and a member of the Editorial Board of “South East Europe Review for Labor and Social Affairs” in Dusseldorf. He also is a member of the Institutional Committee of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe. Moreover, he is the author of several books and has been a lecturer at the Academy of Economic Studies in Chisanau, Moldova.

He became Ambassador of Moldova to the United States in 2010.
