Al Qaeda’s Jihadism – ISIL’s Jihadism: The Making and Remaking of a Modern Ideology
The reality of the growth, disruption, and brutal impact of the Islamist extremist version of Jihad is undeniable— in Syria, Iraq, Pakistan, Libya, Mali, Nigeria, Paris, and beyond. The full potential power and scope of this particular interpretation of Jihad is surely a central question of this moment and of our time. A response, which now seems to be so clearly demanded, requires a clear-eyed assessment of its nature. Such an assessment is not only critical, but urgent, especially within nations which may be threatened and nations with a particular responsibility for international order.
As we seek to better understand the nature of the problem of Islamist Extremist Jihad, we are fortunate to be joined by an authority, William Braniff, who has spent the last decade in serious study of this complex phenomenon. After receiving a master’s degree in international relations from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, Bill Braniff worked in the nuclear counterterrorism field at the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration and at West Point’s Combatting Terrorism Center as Director of Practitioner Education (the nation’s largest provider of counterterrorism education to federal, state, and local government authorities). Since 2012, he has been the Executive Director of the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Mr. Braniff has written a book on Terrorism and Political Islam and has authored articles on almost every facet of global jihadism. He has been interviewed widely in the media, has consulted at the major federal institutions concerned with terrorism, and has testified before Congress.
We can look forward to benefiting from Mr. Braniff’s decade of intense professional examination of Islamic Extremist Jihad and to a clear and straightforward presentation.
It is a privilege and pleasure to welcome Mr. William Braniff to the Council.
