"Possibilities and Challenges in Africa Today"
Few are better placed to discuss the politics and economics of Africa today than Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao, the Ambassador of the African Union to the United States. She will discuss what she believes to be Africa’s most important possibilities and challenges. The Ambassador brings the unique perspective of one committed to international causes, most notably public health in Africa, women’s rights globally, and cultivating the relationship between African countries and the African diaspora.
The Union which she represents consists of all 55 countries on the African continent. Its objectives are wide, truly comprehensive, and include greater unity, territorial integrity and independence, political and social-economic integration of the continent, and sustainable development.
Dr. Chihombori-Quao, a physician by profession, has been recognized internationally with the most prestigious of awards for her efforts to improve healthcare systems in Africa and for promoting women’s rights around the world. Her service to the African Union has included chairing its African Diaspora Health Initiative. Her current ambassadorship is a natural fit for her service to Africa and the cultivation of the African diaspora.
She emigrated to the United States from Zimbabwe; is a graduate of Fisk University; and has degrees in general chemistry, a master’s degree in organic chemistry, and a Doctor of Medicine degree from Meharry Medical College. She did residencies at the State University of New York in General Surgery and at Meharry Medical College in Family Medicine. She has practiced medicine in Tennessee for over a quarter of a century.
Respected for her charitable work, efforts in international movements, and service in the African Union, she brings deep knowledge of Africa and international politics and a commitment to Africa and its diaspora.
It is a great pleasure to welcome Ambassador Arikana Chihombori-Quao to the Council.
