"India and the United States: The Next Decade"
While the United States marshalled allies to contain international communism during the Cold War, India pursued independence from the effort, championed the non-alignment movement, was a friend of the Soviet Union, and favored a state controlled economy. Now, India, a rising power, and the United States are both sensitive to China’s rise, the complexities of Afghanistan/Pakistan, terrorism, and the needs of regional and international order. Their extensive partnership comprehensively covers economic growth and prosperity, diverse facets of defense, nuclear and cyber technology, and social needs, all within a wide range of formal dialogues. The project is consistent with the U.S. supported notion of India as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
It is a powerful alignment with enormous implications for both Asian and global order. We are very fortunate to be joined to discuss these matters by the ambassador of India to the United States, His Excellency Arun Kumar Singh.
Ambassador Singh’s long and distinguished career in the Indian Foreign Service began in 1979. He has been posted to Moscow twice, Addis Ababa, Tokyo, the United Nations office in New York, to Israel as ambassador, to Washington as Deputy Chief of Mission, to Paris as ambassador, and now to Washington as ambassador.
Assignments at home in the Headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have been as Deputy Secretary/Director in the East Asia and Pakistan Divisions and head of the offices of the Foreign Secretary and the External Affairs Minister, and as Joint Secretary dealing first with United Nations policy, and then with the Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran Divisions.
It is a great pleasure and honor to welcome His Excellency Arun Kumar Singh to the Council.
