“Pakistan-U.S. Relations and Regional Issues”
U.S.-Pakistan relations are lodged in an extraordinarily complex, dynamic, and dangerous region of the world. A nuclear-armed state, Pakistan is challenged internally by radical extremists. Her tensions with India and her deep interest in Afghanistan can result in actions which do not always coincide with American policies. However, she has been a friend of the U.S. in the Central Treaty Organization, in opening the door to China, and now in the pursuit of stability in Afghanistan. Americans are often disappointed over differences with Pakistan, but also are appreciative of her cooperation. Surely, Pakistan remains deeply important to the United States in a critical region of the world.
In trying to better understand our relations with this critical actor and the region itself, we are fortunate to be joined by Pakistan’s distinguished Ambassador to the United States. Coming from a family of political public servants, he is deeply familiar with the history and contemporary realities of the politics of Pakistan. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law from Oxford and a Master of Science in Defence and Strategic Studies.
Ambassador Jilani joined Pakistan’s Foreign Service in 1979. At the Foreign Office, he has been the Deputy Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, the Director General for South Asia, and its Spokesman on Foreign Affairs. Overseas assignments have included diplomatic positions in Jeddah, London, and Washington; and service as Deputy High Commissioner and Acting High Commissioner to New Dehli, High Commissioner to Canberra; and Ambassador to Belgium, Luxemburg, and the European Union. Ambassador Jilani was Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary before being appointed Ambassador to the United States in December of 2013.
It is a distinct honor and a pleasure to welcome the distinguished Ambassador of Pakistan, His Excellency Jalil Abbas Jilani to the Council.
