“The Presidential Challenge: from Israel to the Islamic State—and beyond”

John Andrews, a veteran foreign correspondent of The Economist, will provide a tour of the wide range of global challenges which confront the United States, with an emphasis on the Middle East and the extraordinary phenomenon of Islamist extremism.  All of these challenges affect innumerable specific nations and global stability in general.  Each could require an American response and they point to the fundamental question of the American role in the world.

Mr. Andrews is a graduate of Cambridge University in classical and modern Arabic.  After living in Libya and Lebanon, first as an academic and then a journalist, he spent six years with The Guardian before his 24 year tenure at The Economist as its longest serving foreign correspondent.

He has authored two books on Asia, The Economist’s Book of Isms, and very recently a comprehensive survey, The World in Conflict: Understanding the world's troublespots.  He brings the knowledge, understanding, and perspective of a deeply experienced professional journalist to the critical exploration of the global interests and responsibilities of the United States.

It is a great pleasure to welcome Mr. Andrews to the Council.
