“The New National Defense Strategy:

Pursuing Urgent Change at Significant Scale”

The Trump Administration’s national defense strategy’s perceived challenges, policy responses, and budgetary requirements will be authoritatively analyzed by Robert Work who has managed such a creation as Deputy Secretary of Defense in the previous administration.

Robert Work’s long and distinguished career has provided excellent preparation for such a daunting task. He was a distinguished graduate of the Naval Reserve Officers Training Course and received a B.S. degree in Biology at the University of Illinois.  He holds a M.S. degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California; a M.S. degree in Space System Operations from the Naval Postgraduate School; and a M.A. degree in Public Policy from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. He retired from the Marine Corps as a Colonel with his last assignment as Senior Aide to Secretary of the Navy Danzig.

His civilian career began with eight years at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, first as a Senior Fellow and then as Vice President for Strategic Studies. Mr. Work served on President Obama’s Department of Defense Transition Team as leader of the Department of the Navy issues team. Then, in the first Obama term, he served as Undersecretary of the Navy and acted with full authority in the day to day management of the Department of the Navy. Following a year as Chief Executive Officer for the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), he was confirmed as Deputy Secretary of Defense in 2014 where he served until July, 2017.

He presently is Distinguished Senior Fellow for Defense and National Security at the Center for a New American Security and owner of Team Work LLC, which specializes in national security affairs and the future of warfare.

It is an honor and pleasure to welcome Mr. Robert Work to the Council.
